Avon, also known by it's original Indian name of "Kinnakeet", lies off Route 12 approximately 20 miles south of Rodanthe and 7 miles north of Buxton on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Avon's name change came in 1883 when the US Postal service arrived. Kinnakeet is, as it has always been, a quaint sound side fishing village. the best day trip is anywhere on the vast, pristine stretch of shoreline (
maintained by The National Park Service) that are yours to enjoy. The Atlantic
Ocean is absolutely magnificent here. From 10 to 15 foot swells to flat and
clear, almost tropical, these beaches are always breath taking and amazing. The
most popular beach spot is "The Point"
which is
near the Lighthouse and the southern
most part of the Island where it turns to the west.
